Dive bars offer a casual, laid-back atmosphere for beer drinkers of all types. If you’re looking for some cheap food, tasty beers and lively atmosphere, you can’t go wrong by visiting one of Louisville’s better dive bars.
Sergio’s World Beers
It’s a dive bar, but it’s got the beer selection of a specialty brewing company. Sergio’s World Beers is located in Butchertown, one of Louisville’s most historic neighborhoods, at 1605 Story Avenue. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Sergio’s because of the eye-popping beer selection, which is truly varied. You can get a good look at the beers when you visit — you’ll see coolers of it stacked everywhere.
Magnolia Bar and Grill
To locals, Magnolia Bar and Grill is simply “Mag Bar.” And though Louisville is a southern city, the bar is named after a street and not the flower. It’s right in the heart of Old Louisville, at the corner of Magnolia and 2nd Streets. This is one of the hippest dive bars in the city, and lots of the local younger crowd like to gather here for the jukebox selection and the large pool room in the back.
Nachbar is located in the middle of Germantown, literally shoved into a line of houses on a quiet residential street. Local hipsters consider Nachbar to be the best gathering spot in the city. If you’re visiting to drink, you’re in luck. Nachbar has a diverse selection of draft and bottled beers.
The decor in the bar is like no other. German fairytales cover the walls, in the form of unique paintings. The shotgun-style building is one narrow room that can get crowded, but there is a large outdoor area. But this bar is pretty divey, as you’ll find if you visit the restrooms. The only sink is located within the main room of the bar.
You’ll find Groucho’s on Goss Avenue, on the fringes of the Germantown area. Groucho’s has practically become a Louisville tradition among locals, because it’s still manned by Groucho himself and his wife. If you see a guy behind the bar wearing a fedora, you know you’ve found Groucho.
The entire bar is like a seek-and-find for pop culture enthusiasts. The building is peppered with posters, figurines and even a TV that constantly spews kung-fu and horror movies. You can probably already tell by Groucho’s is considered to be one of the best Louisville dive bars, with this kind of eclectic and interesting atmosphere.
