When I was 18, I got into a horrible car accident, and with every accident comes injuries. I was often sore and fatigued, but never paid it much notice beyond going for my regular chiropractic visit. Eventually the pain became too much; I was not just dealing with a sore back, but it was as if it moved into other parts of my body and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. One year after my accident, I finally decided to see my doctor, because the pain I was feeling was not normal for a car accident, and he sent me to a Rheumatologist.
I went in for an exam and told him what I went through. I had pain in all my joints I could hardly grip anything. I felt as if every joint in my body was breaking. Opening water bottles, opening doors, driving to work, walking up stairs, and even rolling over in bed brought me excruciating pain. I felt as if I was burning up my temperature was often 99.8-100.8 degrees and I developed numerous sores like canker sores in my mouth and avoided going outside. The doctor did several physical exams and tests and noticed I had rather swollen joints and digits. My joints were as he described “hot to the touch” which meant they were inflamed, combine that with the pain from simple touch and my fatigue, the doctor sent me to get blood work.
After having blood drawn for a full blood panel including CBC, ANA, and Rheumatoid Factor he diagnosed me as having Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or SLE and put me on Methotrexate and Plaquenil or Hydroxychloroquine. I was also given prescription supplements to help boost my health because of the side effects of the medications.
The first month for me was the worst, I was still in pain and nauseated from the Methotrexate, this combined with being fatigued caused me to want to sleep all the time. The best thing I did during all this besides taking the prescribed medication was to exercise and eat healthy. I walked 30 minutes a day and kept on a whole foods diet. I also got into herbal aids such as consuming 1oz of Apple cider vinegar a day which helped with joint pain and lubrication. Other things I added later such as herbal remedies and aromatherapy for my pain came from intense studying. I have been pain free now for three years and hope others can find relief from Lupus as well.
