COMMENTARY | Hot Air reports on the case of California state Sen/ Leland Yee, a Democrat, who happens to have managed to become both a strong advocate for gun control and an arms trafficker, There are just some things to strange for fiction.
What’s more, Yee is now under accusation for corruption, having accepted tens of thousands of dollars for introducing an undercover FBI agent to an arms dealer as well as helping a client get a contract and for other services rendered. The weapons involved included automatic weapons and missiles to be bought from a Muslim group in the Philippines.
Yee had been a sponsor of gun control legislation in California that so restricted semiautomatic weapons that Gov. Jerry Brown was obliged to veto it.
Topping everything off, the Democrats are reluctant to expel Yee from the California state senate because that would mean losing super majority status. That would mean that Republicans would have enough members to filibuster legislation, which means that Democrats would no longer have the ability to pass laws at will. But keeping Lee in office, at least until he goes to jail, means that Democrats are open to charges of tolerating corruption and hypocrisy on an epic scale.
And one wonders why 2014 is set to be s good year for Republicans. Yee did what he did because he thought he could get away with it. Fortunately Yee was not all that great a master criminal, getting caught up as he did in an FBI sting operation.
California Democrats need to cut their losses and cut this guy loose as fast as possible. They are going to lose their super majority one way or the other. They extent to which they do will largely depend on how arrogant they are perceived to be, Californians have tolerated a lot from Democrats, including policies that have made the former golden state into an economic joke with businesses and jobs fleeing to places like Texas. But there has to be a breaking point and this may well be it.
