As parents we tend to make sure that our kids on a set schedule. We get them up in the morning, make them breakfast, and take them to school. Then we pick them up, help with homework, take them to their activity, and cook dinner. Then it is time for bath and bed. I am a creature of habit so this “schedule” is fine with me, for the most part.
There are times where I do want to break up the monotony and change it up a bit. One way I did that recently was by getting a LEGO construction set. This was an activity that we could do at the kitchen table. There was no smartphones or tablets or even the radio to get in our way. It was just me and my daughters sitting at the table building something together.
We got the LEGO Friends Heartlake News Van set. My girls and I talked about their day at their respective schools, what we were going to do this summer, and just laughed while we were putting together this 278 piece set.
Not only was building this LEGO set fun, but it helped the girls with problem solving and it didn’t seem like work to them. I had them follow the instructions and they led the way in the construction of the news van. It was a great way to have them read a set of directions and see if they could follow the sequence. I do have to say for a six and three year old they did a fantastic job. I only had to step in a few times to help them out when they got stuck.
It may seem like a small thing, but for that day it was great to change things up and have a long and fun conversation with my daughters. They were excited when I did tell them what we were going to do because they have been asking for a new LEGO set for some time now.
My daughters love the LEGO Friends series because it follows the adventures of five girls from Heartlake City. There is a wide variety of sets that focus on themes such as camping, beach and gardening. It looks like there are 27 new building sets and there is even a new jungle adventure theme.
Another great feature is that if you or your kids “misplace” the instructions you can go to the LEGO website and download a new set right there. If you are looking to slow things down a bit and break up the monotony I suggest picking up a LEGO set.
