Lean Cuisine Butternut Squash Ravioli Description
When you take this out of the box you will see a lot of veggies on top of a few good sized ravioli. The ravioli are about 2″ x 1.5″ in size and firm but not hard in texture. Inside the ravioli is a mixture of butternut squash and ricotta cheese combined with onions, egg, and Parmesan cheese. There is a good variety and number of veggies in the tray. The main veggies that I could see were Snow Peas, regular Peas, Julienne Style yellow and orange carrots, and red pepper. To add a little something extra there are some walnut pieces. The sauce is a creamy whitish color and there is enough to cover the meal without it being soupy.
Packaging Cost and Value
The meal comes in a rectangular box that is a little more than 1″ high, 6″ wide and a little over 7″ long. The meal itself is packaged in a black plastic tray. The dinner is covered with a thin plastic film that can go right into the microwave. The tray and box are both recyclable, the plastic film must be discarded in the trash. The boxes of Lean Cuisine are a nice size and most of them are of uniform size so they fit nicely stacked in my freezer.
I bought this dinner recently at the grocery store for $2 on sale. The regular price can go up to as much as double that. At the $2 price this is a great value for me.
Preparing this meal is about as easy as can be. The directions state to cook on high in the microwave for 3 minutes with the film in place, and then to remove it from the microwave, peel back the film and stir to coat all the ingredients. Then you are to return it to the microwave and cook for an additional 1.5 minutes. I tend to like to take short cuts so I just set my microwave to cook for 4.5 minutes and then let it sit for a couple minutes in the microwave as indicated. When I removed the film it seemed fine so this is how I will prepare it in the future. I am sure there is some value to cooking it the way that they say, but I am not too picky so it makes sense to skip the extra step for me.
Does the picture match the finished Result
The Picture on the Lean Cuisine Butternut Squash Ravioli box shows 5 pieces of ravioli, veggies(mentioned above) and you can see the walnuts . When I prepared the meal the only difference was that it did not seem that there were as many walnuts as pictured. Of course it could be that they put them all on top and obviously in a meal like this, they would be spread throughout the meal. I think if anything there were more veggies that what appeared in the picture on the box. There were exactly five pieces of ravioli
Taste and Experience
After the meal was heated I removed it from the microwave and removed the plastic film from the top. The aroma of the dinner is not really strong but was appealing to me. I tend to like squash and veggies so if you are not a fan, you might not find it so appealing. My husband can not stand squash and would not touch this with a ten foot pole, but I think it is “to die for” The sauce is creamy and white, and not so thick that it seems gloppy. It is probably the consistency of a light clam chowder. The taste is rich and gives me a warm feeling when I eat it.
When you bite into the ravioli which is firm but not hard, you will detect the mild taste of butternut squash. I actually dissected one so that I could just taste what was inside. It is a very small amount of squash and I could not really taste the ricotta cheese. The flavors are mild and in my opinion the vegetables are the focus of this meal. The veggies are cooked but not mushy. They taste similar to fresh cooked veggies and have a similar texture. The walnuts add an unexpected crunch every now and then. All in all I loved this meal in all aspects.

Ingredients for products like this change over time so if you come by in a year from now it may not be the same as it is now. I did mention the main ingredients in my review and of course the pasta component of wheat.
