When listening to songs of the past that had the ability to move someone, I can’t help but to go back to the songs performed by Kurt Cobain. While his death was tragic, his music reflected a life lived, sorrows felt and the happiness to come.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night– The pleading with a partner not to lie, just tell truth in life by all means just tell me the truth. In life, to question the where a bouts of a love is to know that they do not belong in your life. If you can name fifty places from Sunday on where they may be, it is not worth repeating so many times.
Come as You Are-The beginning of the song sets the tone for the words. The light strumming shows strength as one beckons a friend to “come” quickly but take your time in getting here. It speaks volumes of the bi-polar nature of his life. Many often reflect to this song due to the lyrics of “I Don’t Have A Gun”, an odd reflection in the manner in which he killed himself. If in fact it was suicide as it was ruled, was this song a cry out for the help that he sought but couldn’t ask for.
In Bloom– speaks to the followers who know all the words to the music, the one who sings without knowledge. If you can’t feel the music and identify with the mood and tone, you are a lost follower. You are blind in nature and following the crowd instead of finding a niche that works for you.
Heart Shaped Box– the choices and sins of those before you have an impact on your view of the world and life. Each dies after sacrifices themselves to the will and direction of everything and everyone before the. In death, there are no more complaints that can be portrayed upon another who has no control to make the choices.
The Man Who Sold the World– Fame, fortune and the notoriety that comes with such is no match for the demons of the soul. Quite the opposite as they inhibit the growth of self-reflection that often had the opportunity of picking one’s self up and bringing them back to life. The fight has no ability to produce a win except in the eyes of others.
Kurt Cobain sang words of despair, lost souls and times gone by. His lyrics touched many who suffered much in the same way but they heard the lyrics in such a different way. Such as the song dictates of the followers that sing along without knowledge.
