As an older person I suffer from knee pain. X-rays show in time a knee replacement is coming. When? That is up to me. My Doctor and I have talked about a knee replacement and we have talked about shots in the knee. Because I have a lot of movement in my knee we decided to hold off on the shots and replacement for now.
What can I do to prolong a knee replacement?
Exercise is the best form of prevention. The idea, a body in motion stays in motion is true. Even as a writer if I sit too long I tend to get stiff. Winters are the hardest because I do not get out and walk like I would in the other three seasons. If I use a tread mill or swim in the pool they help the most.
Weight and knee pain
Weight on the legs and more to the point on the knees will be the most stress for the knees. Therefore, dropping this extra weight will ease the pain. Weight loss is probably the best solution for knee pain. I would say it should be a priority even before medication. Medication is only going to be a temporary fix. (https://wwwmed.umich.edu )
The right juices can also reduce the pain and inflammation around the knee. Pomegranate juice is rich in ellagic acid which is an anti-inflammatory. It is known also for its pain killing abilities. I have found taking 900 mg to 1,200 mg of an herb from India called boswellia each day is a very effective pain killer. (https://wwwmed.umich.edu )
As with any kind of treatment you should talk to your doctor. Only you and your doctor can tell what is working for you. However if one treatment is not working, than stop the treatment. I fell a few years ago and broke my ankle. My doctor put it in a cast for eight weeks but after the cast was removed and I started back walking on the foot I still hurt just as bad as I did when I broke the ankle. My Doctor took another X-ray; because of the swelling he could not see the third break. We decided to put pins in to hold the breaks together and another cast for eight more week. What I am trying to say is, no matter how good the doctor is he does not know how your knee feels to you. You have to talk to him/her.
