The mad science theme is a fun way to add a little bit of learning into a kids’ birthday party. The decorations can really set the tone for the party. Use these ideas to get you started.
A little bit of science equipment placed around the party area is a good start to creating the theme. Beakers, microscopes, magnifying glasses and petri dishes are examples. Fill the petri dishes with colored gelatin so they look real. You can also add colored water to the beakers to look like different potions. A little dry ice makes the potions look like they’re steaming.
A few signs can also add to the science theme. Start with a banner that says “Welcome to the Secret Science Lab”. You can also put a picture of a hand by the door as a scanner to enter. The guests place a hand on the picture before entering.
If you have any old science projects around the house, pull them out to use as displays. If not, you can easily create a few simple experiments to put on display. A volcano with baking soda and vinegar lava is always a favorite. Another idea is to make a model of the solar system using Styrofoam balls. Paint the balls to look like the different planets. Hang them above a table in the party area.
Lab Gear Area
Every science lab needs an area for the scientists to gear up. Buy a white lab coat for each party guest. Hang the plastic hooks with removable adhesive backing to hold the jackets. You can also hang a pair of goggles for each little scientist. The area adds to the science look of the room and gives the kids a fun way to get in character for the upcoming science fun.
