Since the 1970s, rayon garments have been rocking the runways and today’s designers don’t love this fabric any less than those fashion pioneers. Dresses made from this type of fabric have a supple feel and a well-made dress drapes your figure without clinging to your body in an unflattering way. After a few spring and summer parties, you may need to wash your garment to keep it looking clean and smelling fresh. However, before tossing it into the machine, read the label. Some manufacturers suggest that you dry clean the outfit. Other labels suggest that you can dry clean it professionally or wash it home. You can safely opt for the latter but do use caution. Rayon can shrink and lose its shape if you wash it with the wrong products or water temperature.
Laundering Your Rayon Dress
You need a plastic tub, large enough to hold your dress or you could use your sink. Fill the tub or sink with cool/warm water. As you fill the container, add two to three drops of gentle laundry detergent. To protect your dress from snagging, remove any jewelry you may be wearing on your hands. Rings and bracelets can catch the fabric and might leave a snag.
Push the dress into the water, submerging it carefully. Use your hands to move the dress around in the water, shaking it slightly to loosen any visible dirt. You should do this for two to three minutes. If you see a noticeable stain, use a new, soft toothbrush and a drop of soap to scrub at the spot. Don’t scrub the garment as you can damage the surface of the fabric.
Now empty the water. Add fresh, cool water to the container to rinse away the soap, then drain it. Grip the dress with both hands and lightly squeeze the water out of it using a twisting motion. This process may take a few minutes. Place a towel on a flat surface, like a countertop. Lay the dress on the towel and roll it up to squeeze out the rest of the water. Unroll the dress and lay it flat to air dry. It is not recommended that you dry rayon dresses in a dryer. Exposing your garment to heat can leave your dress looking misshapen–even smaller.
You can keep that rayon dress looking perfect, just like the day you bought it.
