Being on vacation is a great time for everyone but even though you might be vacationing in the mountains which is an adventure in itself, kids still get bored after a while. Bored kids will drive you crazy so prepare yourself with some great ideas to keep them busy and happy once the novelty of the cabin and its surroundings have worn off
Raking Pine Needles – With so many trees around mountain cabins, there is a constant sprinkling of pine needles falling from the trees. If you are someone who likes to keep your grounds clean, you can have your kids rake up the pine needles. To make sure it is manageable, they can make smaller piles as they rake them up and then go back later to pick them up and put them in trash bags. All you need is a rake, dust pan or a piece of cardboard will work and trash bags. Making a game out of it is easy, who can rake up the most piles first, this will get the job done faster and make it more fun for the children.
Collecting Pine cones – I remember how I love to find a pine cone when I was a kid, always looking inside to see if the birds had left any nuts behind for me to eat. Depending on where your cabin is and how many trees there are, there are usually lots of pine cones on the ground. Have your kids collect the pine cones putting them in paper bags or even plastic bags from the super market. They can count them later to see who collected the most.
Scavenger Hunt – Here is a great way to keep those kids busy and they will have a blast doing it. A scavenger hunt is always a great time, going door to door looking for items on a list, trying to complete your list first so you can return the winner. Having one around your cabin can be fun to by having someone hide different items around the yards and the other kids have to find them. Simply keep track of what is hidden and where on a piece of paper so you can be sure that everything was found. Once this game is complete, switch sides and the others now hide the items for the opposing team to find.
Sweeping the Porches and Patios – I know that when I am vacationing in the mountains each day there are so many pine needles and other tree debris, dust and dirt that I like to have it swept up each day. Why not let the children have some fun with this, just give them a broom and away they go and the neat part is, they can sweep it right off into the dirt unless you happen to have a grass yard around your cabin. This not only keeps them busy but it gives you a clean start each day to enjoy all day long.
Collecting Rocks – I know in my back yard there are lots of small rocks and pebbles as well as some larger ones. You can have the kids collect these rocks and pile them around the trees and bushes in the yard. This give a nice decorative look and gets those stones out from under your feet. I know sometimes when I walk across the yard I sometimes tweak or twist my footing when I step on these smaller rocks and can trip over the larger ones.
Make sure to keep an eye on the kids and keep them hydrated with water or other drinks they enjoy and while they are busy you can put together some snacks for them to enjoy when they are done because they will surely work up an appetite.
