Flip-flops protect your soles and keep your feet cool but sometimes, the thong straps don’t like staying in place. If your shoes leave you, even for a moment, you can end up falling or twisting an ankle. Still, despite the risks, the flip-flop remains summer’s most popular shoe. Don’t risk an unwanted trip by the pool-try these techniques for keeping your sandals in place. (Always wear the correct shoes and never run in flip-flops.)
Try Foot Cushions
Your flip-flops keep sliding off your feet. What do you do? First clean the shoe with a baby wipe or a soapy, damp rag. It’s important to have a clean shoe sole for this shoe trick. The shoe should be clean and dry. Now peel off the adhesive backing from your foot cushion. (You can find these inexpensive inserts at your local pharmacy.)
Place the cushion right where the ball of your foot would rest. If you need to, slide your foot in the shoe and mark the spot with a pencil before attaching the cushion. By adding a cushion at the ball, you’ll give your feet something to grab a hold of when you walk.
Secure With Hairspray
This method works best with leather flip-flops but you should have some level of success on rubber shoes too. Lightly spray the inside of the flip flop with hairspray. Immediately slide your feet into the shoes and wear them until the hairspray dries completely. This will give you better traction.
As a rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to replace your summer shoes each year. If you notice tearing at the thong, go ahead and toss them out or take them to a shoe repair center. Don’t cut the grass or do yard work in your flip-flops.
