Kate Gosselin and her children are going to be back in the limelight for a one-night Kate Plus 8 TV special on TLC this June. According to an interview with US Weekly, Kate says that the twins and sextuplets are “extremely excited” to film again for the special. The television special will feature how the children have grown up while in the spotlight and will feature the most recent news on Kate’s career. For those who have followed the famous family since their beginning, the TV special will likely be a greatly anticipated way to see the children and how they’ve grown in the two years they’ve been away from the public eye.
Being in the public eye has its drawbacks as Kate Gosselin has likely learned. Over the years on their reality show, Jon and Kate dealt with plenty of backlash in regard to the many questionable attitudes and actions they displayed. Kate was well known for her often over-the-top reactions and explosive moments on the show. Because of these reactions, it is no surprise that there are an abundance of “cringe-worthy” moments for Kate. If you are seeing for the first time or would like a reminder, here are some of Kate’s worst moments:
Shopping Gone Wrong
In one of the earlier episodes of Jon & Kate Plus 8, Shopping for Ten, Jon and Kate take all eight children to go shopping. While in the store, Kate becomes visibly irate and begins barking commands at Jon in front of the children and the other people in the store. Jon awkwardly obeys her orders after being embarrassed in front of everyone and later expresses his irritation with her treatment within the store. Kate acts surprised with Jon’s reaction and, in their later couch interview, dismisses the issue by saying that she doesn’t care what others think. Her treatment of Jon seemed very unnecessary and uncalled for; as Jon described it, Kate treated him like a “whipping boy.” Many viewers found that moment within that episode to be quite surprising and some considered it one of the worst moments of the show. Although that moment did not stop viewers from tuning in again, it was one moment of many that began to alter their view of Kate.
In the third season of Jon & Kate Plus 8, in the episode Cooking with the Twins, all of the children come down with the flu. Kate expresses her irritation about the overabundance of laundry due to the children getting sick. She complains about having to do extra loads of laundry and how stressful it is. When Joel, one of the sextuplets, gets ill in bed, she has him sleep on a blanket in the laundry room. Many viewers expressed shock at Kate having the sick boy sleep on the cold, linoleum floor while so ill with the flu. They felt that trying to avoid doing extra laundry didn’t really warrant forcing a sick child to sleep on a cold, hard floor.
No Markers at the Marker Factory
Only a few episodes after, the family heads to the Crayola factory in Color Me Gosselin. The kids all get white modeling clay to sculpt and color but, immediately, Kate puts a stop to the fun. She tells all of the kids that they can’t use the markers since they will get it all over their clothes. As she continues to disrupt their fun, the children get more and more upset, especially the twins. They begin to complain and tear up, saying that Kate “never lets [them] do anything.” As the children begin to start having meltdowns, Kate calls the event quits. While Kate was reprimanding the children and taking away markers, Jon questioned why Kate would dress them in nice clothes if it mattered so much to her that their outfits stayed clean. Kate completely dismissed Jon’s statement by saying that the children would continue to wear nice clothes but that they didn’t need to color with markers. Some viewers took Kate’s need to control using markers at a place for coloring as over-the-top and unnecessary.
Famously dubbed Gumgate, this moment caused a large amount of backlash for Kate. Near the end of season 3, during the episode Mady’s Day, Cara and the sextuplets spend the day with Aunt Jodi. While there, the children convince Aunt Jodi that they are allowed to have gum. When Jon, Kate, and Mady return from their day out, Kate discovers that some of the sextuplets have bits of gum on parts of their clothes. When she sees that Collin has gum on his bear, she gets angry and frustrated, ultimately threatening to throw away his bear. Collin begins crying as Kate keeps repeating that she is going to throw the bear away and that he should say goodbye to it. At this point, many viewers said that they simply couldn’t watch the show any longer since Kate’s behavior was unbelievably cruel towards Collin. Many felt that that moment was one of the worst moments for Kate and showed the worst side of her.
Gosselin-Palin Camping Trip
Kate and the kids go to Alaska to visit Sarah Palin and her family. Sarah and her family show the Gosselins all about camping and the outdoor activities they can do. The kids are busy enjoying themselves out by the water with the Palins and their siblings. Kate, on the other hand, is busy having a fit about the weather. She complains, saying “Sorry I’m miserable but somebody’s gotta be.” She asks her children, “Do you wanna stay or go?” and gets many responses that they want to stay. She walks off and says “Kay, goodbye, you’re now a Palin, you’re not a Gosselin.” Kate’s behavior was incredibly immature and uncalled for. Viewers found it silly that Kate broke down over a situation she put herself and her children in, for whatever reason.
RV Trip Meltdown
During the Gosselins’ two week RV trip in the second season of Kate Plus 8, the RV breaks down and causes an intense meltdown between Kate and the other adults. As Kate freaks out, she explodes on everyone, storming around and yelling. One of the babysitters calls it quits after being yelled at, exclaiming “I’m done! I’m done.” Ashley, the babysitter that left, mentioned that “I would die for these kids but I can’t spend one more minute with her.” Kate later responds that “quite honestly, I think it was a little over-dramatic.” Many viewers felt that Kate was incredibly out of line after seeing how hard Ashley and the other babysitters worked to keep everything held together. Some mentioned that Kate was the over-dramatic one and acted like quite the diva.
Silent “Today” Interview
Just this January, Kate, Cara, and Mady went on the “Today Show” and gave what many are calling an incredibly awkward and cringe-worthy interview. The interviewer asks Mady and Cara questions to get their opinions on their lifestyle and family. When Mady fails to answer a question, Kate prompts her by saying “Mady, your words,” and gets an odd look from Mady. The interviewer tries to continue on and get more from the girls but Cara refuses to answer. Mady begins to speak up a bit but Kate ultimately takes control of the conversation. Many glances and looks are made between the girls and their mother, seeming to communicate something private. Although the interview does smooth out towards the end, the uncomfortable and awkward feeling from the beginning of the interview is all that is memorable.
