Karachi is the biggest city in Pakistan. Once known as the city of lights, Karachi is paralyzed by target killing and suicide bombings in recent times. The sectarian violence has claimed many lives in the provincial capital, and most of the time, the mosques and other public places are targeted to terrorize the citizens.
According to a survey, thousands of people were killed in suicide bombings and other terrorist activities from 2005 to 2009. Government took strict measures to restrict the terrorist activities, and by 2010, there was a decrease in suicide bombings, but target killing increased rapidly, gunning down thousands of people each year.
The most dangerous areas in the city are Lyari, Manghopir, Kati Pahari, Sohrab Goth, Khamiso Goth, Orangi, Pakhtoonabad, Pak Colony, Shershah, Machaar Colony, and Mohajir Camp. These are the places where violence never ends with clashes taking place between different rival groups each day. Most of the time these clashes are brutal and many people lose their lives in just a few minutes. Dozens of cars, buses, and rickshaws are set on fire during violence closing down the shops, offices and educational institutions. The city wears a deserted look and life comes to a halt in the blink of an eye.
According to the LiveLeak, The death toll in the provincial capital rises each year despite strict security measures. The city has seen a sharp increase in killings in the past few years with 1,981 people killed in 2010, 2,382 killed in 2011 and 3,105 killed in 2012. The year 2013 proved to the deadliest in the history of Karachi so far, killing as many as 3251 people. A significant number of these people had no connection with any political party. The killing is on the rise each day and the year 2014 saw hundreds of people already killed in just over a month
A large number of people fall prey to target killing every year with at least ten people gunned down each day. The city sometimes loses 30 people a day to gun violence. The terrorist and other culprits have turned the city of lights into the city of blood. Each passing day brings sorrow and pain to one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
