BASH: Bexar/Atascosa Secular Homeschoolers hosts weekly park day for homeschoolers in south San Antonio and Atascosa County to get together for some casual fun. The kids get to play and the adults chat. Over the last few weeks, park day has been held at several different area parks to get a feel for which ones are suitable for the group. Jourdanton City Park is a bit of a trek for those in San Antonio but very convenient for the Atascosa County homeschoolers. It is a very nice park with plenty of amenities for all ages. Jourdanton City Park will be in the regular rotation for park days.
The park has two entrances and is surrounded by a chain link fence so it is fairly secure. Parents felt comfortable letting their kids have the run of the park even though it is quite large. The play areas are huge. There are dedicated spaces for the smaller kids, older kids and those in between. There are two separate swing sets for toddlers and big kids. There were several areas where kids could climb including rocks a castle, rock wall and dome climber. There were some animal rockers the younger kids could ride and three separate playscapes. There was even a ball funnel.
The play areas were nicely landscaped with plenty of trees for shade. There were picnic tables scattered throughout the area and benches so you could sit and rest while watching the kids play. There is a very large covered pavilion with picnic tables and plenty of concrete space for riding bikes, scooters or drawing with chalk. There is also a walking path that can be used. There is a multi court basketball area, a multi court volleyball area and open space for other sports. The volleyball area was a popular spot for the younger kids to use as giant sandbox.
Restrooms are free standing and quite nice but they lack toilet paper. So, for those who are planning on spending a few hours, make sure to bring your own roll. The United States, Texas and POW/MIA flags are torn and worn and should be retired and replaced. But, those were the only true downsides to this park. While there we saw all age groups from toddler to teen and everyone was having fun.
Jourdanton City Park is located off Highway 16 in Jourdanton, just north of Highway 97. While it may not be a frequent stop because it is inconvenient to the San Antonio homeschoolers, it is worth an occasional visit because it is a pretty park with lots of amenities.
