Jews worshiping at a synagogue in Donetsk, Ukraine for passover were confronted by masked men handing out pamphlets. The pamphlets demanded that all Jews register with the Donetsk Republic headquarters or face fines, property confiscation, and deportation. Ukraine has a long history of tension and conflict with the Jewish people. Back in World War 2 when millions of Ukrainians were being imprisoned, starved, and oppressed under the USSR, Jews were resented because they had disproportionate representation in the Soviet Government. This caused a surge of Ukrainian antisemitism in the following years and some even falsely characterized the entire Soviet Union as a construct of Jewish conspirators. It would appear that Russian occupation has triggered a resurgence of these sentiments, which is particularly worrying because this is a direct parallel to Jews in Nazi Germany registering themselves to the state. The Spokesman for the Donesk Republic deny any involvement and claim that the fliers are an attempt by protesters to foment conflict against the Ukrainian Government by creating a false flag of state discrimination. The claim that these papers are the result of protestors are of little consolation to the Jewish community, and in response, Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League denounced the use of antisemitism for political purposes, state-sponsored or otherwise. Whoever made theses notices, it could result in further escalation of the Ukrainian conflict, this time with Ethno-religious tensions escalated in addition to the resentment of Russian occupation.
