May 8: Royals (16-18) 0, Mariners (18-16) 1 — Box Score
Behind a sensational performance by starter Hisashi Iwakuma, Corey Hart provided the game’s only run to lift the Seattle Mariners to a narrow 1-0 victory against the Kansas City Royals.
Iwakuma went eight dominant innings, allowing just four hits and no runs. He struck out seven and threw 93 pitches.
On the other side, Royals starter Danny Duffy got the loss after just allowing one earned run in six very strong frames of his own.
The game’s lone run was scored in the third when the Mariners successfully played a little “small ball”. Following a Mike Zunino double, Michael Saunders sacrificed himself in order to move Zunino to third. After a strike out and an intentional walk to Robinson Cano, Hart singled home a run to center.
In the ninth, Fernando Rodney came in to close the door for the Mariners. Rodney was able to wiggle himself out of a two-on and one-out situation for his 10th save of the year.
Important things to note: The Mariners registered just two hits in the entire game — both coming in the third … There was a total of just six hits in the entire game.
