Google is the next best thing to bread and butter and it has the power to rid the world of poverty through YouTube. Anyone with a digital camera and a smile can earn from the trickling down of cyber pennies. Imagine a video camera in the hands of a mother at a water stand in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the hands of a fisherman on the shores of Madagascar, or in the hands of a youth in the slums of Haiti or the state of Bihar, India. Let them make their own pennies a day! – A channel per village! – The Ultimate Reality TV.
The resourcefulness of a single mother who lives on the far edges of poverty in Anytown, USA who researches and brings public domain gems to her audience and earns enough to cover her very low rent each month would not be uncommon. The young man who would otherwise be found sitting on a stump in a loud argument with his peers, the only words recognizable from the protection of the inner walls, n-word, mother- effer, n-word, n-word, mother- effer, n-word, would no longer be as commonplace, replaced with a silent eye peering through a camera lens at some marvel. – But some would not have it this way.
Rogue individuals who use their tech savvy to divert the flow of revenue from the worthy into greedy hands are much too prevalent. They have devised a system of filtering funds using the vulnerability of the YouTube’s Content ID system. Works that are in the public domain are free for public use, usually, but not necessarily so on YouTube. Some YouTube partners illegally claim bits of public domain works making it impossible for another person to use that work without revenue going into the wrong hands. “Falsely claiming copyright is a criminal offense” say the folks at Public Domain Sherpa.” False copyright claims made through misleading copyright notices and exaggerated copyright warnings are, basically, copyright abuse.”
The voice of the wronged continually falls on deaf ears. Persisting in making your voice heard leads to sanctions which place your YouTube account in jeopardy (and you are plagued with emails containing viruses and phishing scams.) Copyright strikes against you are engineered and your account loses monetization. This is the new gold-rush! This is the new frontier! But unlike the old west, everyone is not equally armed, and the “good” stands to lose every time.
There’s a new kind of censorship in our closely interlaced world created by technology. Those with computer knowledge are the new gunslingers. As we rely on big web, more and more, for our livelihood, we are in need of a new breed of defenders to speed to the defense of a community under siege.
Today, there are three truths that we must all live by:
- Don’t bite the hand that feeds you!
- Don’t argue with your cook!
- And, don’t disagree with Big Web!
