About three years ago, I had bought an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC from Best Buy. It came with 250 GB Hard drive, an HDMI port along with eSATA connection, and an SD Drive. It was great for playing DVDs, music, games and Internet TV. The HP Media Smart was integrated with Rhapsody, Hulu, YouTUbe, Netflix, Pandora , and more.

Last month, the laptop reached EOL and was obsolete. HP no longer provided service or repair for this model. That was about the time my hard drive crashed, and I called HP to diagnose the problem. The HP Tech support advised me to purchase a new laptop as this model was no longer supported. They also advised me to take it to a local computer repair shop and try my luck there. Most local computer repair shops advised me to buy a new laptop as it would be cheaper than fixing an old one.

However, I was determined. I wanted to recover the data on my hard drive. So I took my “corrupt” Hard Drive and the laptop to Central Computers, The Tech Store on 3777 Stevens Creek Blvd in Santa Clara. The experience with Central Computers was very frustrating. After numerous misdiagnosis, over-the-top estimates, I ended up paying for unnecessary diagnostic tests and outright incorrect repairs performed. After paying over $200 for the charges made by Central Computers, I decided to e-waste this laptop and purchase a new one since none of the issues were resolved. I realized that my $200 had gone to waste!
What’s more frustrating is that Central Computers has a history of incorrectly tracking purchases and receipts, and they did not correctly process the purchase of my new 500GB Seagate ST500LT012 Hard Drive. I had to spend quite a bit of time and money convincing the store of my proof of purchase! Luckily, I had saved the old receipts and credit card statements which saved my good name and reputation with the store!
In conclusion, based on my experience, I advise that if an old laptop has reached End-Of-Life and is in need of repair , do not fix it! It is smarter to buy a new laptop and make sure to recover the data from the old laptop!
