The X-Men franchise has been fueled by the latest edition to hit the big screens. Days of Future Past may not be only the latest of the X-Men films but likely the greatest. The story is pulled from the pages of one of the top Marvel comics of all time and is told with great detail. However, there are a number of inconsistencies that move through the movie. Here are just a few of the inconsistencies.
Professor Xavier is alive
One of the things that never seems to be explained is the fact that Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is somehow alive for this film. The good professor lost his life in a struggle with Jean Grey’s alter ego, the Phoenix. In fact, The Last Stand shows Xavier being disintegrated by the power of the Phoenix. The closing of the movie shows the tombstone of Xavier and apparently he is dead. How is Professor Charles Xavier alive to recruit Wolverine to be sent back in time?
Wolverine has adamantium
When the Wolverine closes and the clip shows between the credits, Wolverine turns and extends his claws to defend himself. To be abundantly clear, Wolverine extends bone claws. It seems that the Silver Samurai uses his device to extract the adamantium from Wolverine’s body. This also does not take into account that the adamantium claws were cut off by the Samurai during their battle. The future Wolverine has his adamantium claws when he extends them. How does Wolverine have claws at all and how does he have his precious adamantium?
Magneto has his powers
The Last Stand showed that Magento had lost his powers when the power stealing device struck him. The device rendered him without his ability to use magnetism but at the end of the movie, Magneto seems to be slowly regaining his powers. This still does not explain how his powers returned and a time line of connection with the last movie.
How did Xavier and Magento settle their differences?
Charles Xavier and Magneto were on opposite ends of the spectrum regarding the manner to handle the ongoing crisis between humans and mutants. Magneto had believed that earth should be conquered and ruled by mutants. Xavier believed that the mutants had a responsibility to protect the world. How do these two men finally come together? We are given little information on how the future magneto and Xavier settle their differences in the future time.
One good thing about time travel is that it changes everything. Days of Future Past rewrites the history books, literally. The common sci-fi time travel genre leads to a multitude of changes that can rewrite the whole history of the X-Men. The goal may have simply been to erase the damage done by the terrible scripting in The Last Stand. Now with a course set straight once again, the X-Men can make their way into a plethora of story lines that will lead to much greater future success.
