Some jobs naturally come with lots of stress. Others are stressful due to factors, such as coworkers or the work environment. You can’t control your boss, your coworkers or even your job duties, but you can resolve to feel happier at the office with these de-stress ideas.
Decorate Your Space
It’s the little touches that often make the difference. Many offices are stark, boring and not very inspiring. Don’t let a drab office bring you down. If you have natural light in your work space, bring in a small potted plant. The greenery adds color and life to the space. There’s something soothing about a little bit of nature indoors.
Personal photos are often a stress reliever and motivator. When you’re having a rough day at the office, you can glance over at your smiling kids or a picture of your best friends. Even a picture of yourself in a proud moment can de-stress your work space.
Do you have files scattered across your desk? Do you have to dig for your phone every time it rings? Clutter is a quick way to raise your stress levels at work. Take some time to create an organizational system that works for you. Maybe you don’t like having your files in a cabinet. That’s fine. But switch to colored file folders with a color-coding system to find things quickly. Or use baskets on your desk to keep different materials organized.
If your coworkers are a source of stress, find a way to block them out. Listen to motivational music with headphones so you don’t disturb anyone else. Reposition your desk or computer screen so your back is to your coworkers. You probably can’t eliminate all contact with coworkers, but limiting your exposure to them can reduce your stress.
Find an Outlet
No matter how relaxing your work environment, you’re likely to still feel stress at times. Keep some stress relieves handy in your desk for those moments. A stress ball you can squeeze when things get crazy is one example. Or sit on an exercise ball so you can rock away your stress. Find something that works for you when things get stressful at work.
Talk It Out
If something — or someone — in particular causes most of the stress at work, address the issue. If the overall noise level in the office is a distraction, bring it up to your boss. If a coworker constantly bugs you with stories about her life, explain to her that you need to work without interruption. Often we tend to make things a bigger deal in our head than they are. Confronting the problem head-on can end it quickly.
Relax at Work
Instead of complaining about how stressful your job is, take steps to make it less stressful. You won’t eliminate the stress completely, but you may find the little changes make the stress a lot better.
