The glamour of traveling to faraway cities filled with intrigue and flavorful fashion is one of the advantages of being a supermodel that is admired from afar. The setting of a photo shoot as the perfect muse is pampered and doted upon to portray the brand image, puts us in absolute awe. The runway allows for supermodels to wow the audiences as these supermodels savor the richness of being draped in carefully crafted clothes, sometimes worth thousands of dollars. Every supermodel’s day is the opening of a new chapter of that fairytale life that is a constant reminder of the spell that they continually cast which has brought them this instant success.
It may seem enchanting to those of us looking in from the outside, but, there is more to the dream than meets the eye. Long hours of standing on their feet in uncomfortable shoes, and at times, barely getting any sleep and being hidden by layers of makeup and hair products, can all take their toll over time. For that very reason and also because of the fickleness of the industry itself, supermodels have decided to branch out and let their talents take them in new and different directions so that when the candle burns out, they still have a successful and satisfying career to fill their lives.
Karlie Kloss came gallantly on to the scene majestically at only 14 years of age as she had that special look that companies, brands and fashion houses strongly desire. She commands the runway as she walks for Victoria’s Secret , Christian Dior, Anna Sui, Marc Jacobs and many more. With a tall and statuesque pose, Kloss introduced us to the new CLA-Class from Mercedes-Benz as it was unveiled at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week last year. Karlie Kloss also served as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Ambassador. Keeping busy is more than just an option, it is what inspires her to branch out in many directions. Baking gluten-free cookies from her own original recipe for Momofuku Milk Bar and called ‘Karlie’s Kookies’, they have become a New York City favorite as she donates a portion of the proceeds to hungry children all across the world via FEED projects. Now Karlie is also on the other end of the camera, taking her creativity to the design world as she is now creating a collection of sunglasses with six limited-edition styles. The collection is marketed by stylish eyewear brand, Warby Parker. Prices range from $145 to $195 for a pair. Receiving the most satisfaction from being generous, Kloss will be donating some of the proceeds to Edible SchoolYard, a charity which builds gardens and kitchen classrooms in New York City’s public schools. This is only just the beginning for this 21 year-old supermodel.
The 2012 Supermodel of the Year, Cara Delevingne, has a wild side that is difficult to tame. Drawing a huge following of fans and a Twitter record number of followers, Cara walks the runway with a finesse and strength that few can master. She has stepped into the world of acting and excels at singing and playing the drums. She has posed naked ‘for the cause’ (cancer research), showing how deeply she supports finding a cure in our lifetime. Like Karlie, Cara has decided that she has a curious interest in design which has led her to design a capsule collection for DKNY. This 15-piece collection will be in stores at the end of October 2014 with tees, tanks, leather jackets and all will be unisex pieces. Prices will range from $70 to $735. Cara feels that DKNY is urban and edgy, the perfect brand to bring out individuality, the perfect brand to mesh with her talent and display the many sides to her character.
Another beauty with a smile as bright as her personality, Christie Brinkley continues to symbolize how supermodels branch out in directions far beyond the modeling industry. Christie was long known as the blond Sports Illustrated swimsuit supermodel who made a day at the beach look like heaven on earth. Now at the age of 60, Christie can truly say that she is very accomplished in more than just modeling. She has gone on to become an actress, an illustrator designing the cover of ex-husband Billy Joel’s album ‘River Of Dreams’, an expressive photographer with a love of nature, a writer with a breakout book on outdoor beauty and fitness, designer, entrepreneur and one of the most important loves of her life, philanthropy. She has been rewarded for her generosity as she is an advocate for human and animal rights as well as the environment. She has taken a stand through the well-known and dedicated organization, PETA, and plays a major role in anti-nuclear activities such as the campaign to stop High Flux Beam Reactor at the Brookhaven National Lab. Brinkley is vocal in her local community, speaking out against the threat of nuclear waste in our rivers and streams and the threat this issue poses to our children. She stepped into the political spotlight when she served as a delegate on the 2000 Democratic Convention held in Los Angeles. She has gone abroad and visited our troops giving them messages of love from home. There doesn’t seem to be anything that Christie Brinkley can’t do.
These are only a few of the supermodels that have gone beyond modeling. The count is rising for those aiming to gain greater all-around fulfillment. This alone should serve as inspiration for all of us to live our dreams and when we set these supermodels on a pedestal, we must always remember that they are down-to-earth people just like you and me. Beauty goes far beyond the mirror.
