If your kids are crazy for sports, what better idea to celebrate their special day than a sports-themed birthday party? Whether their sports obsession is all-encompassing or particular to soccer, football, baseball, basketball or golf, here are some ideas on how to integrate a sports obsession into a fun, affordable sports-themed kid’s birthday party:
Party decorations – Most party supply venues (and even big-box and dollar stores) offer sports-themed table and plateware, including table coverings, plates, napkins, cups and centerpieces. Look for balloons in the shape of sports balls, or team logos to display around the party. Have your kids place their sports equipment around the party for extra decoration.
Party food – For a sports-themed birthday party, you have a lot of great food options. You can opt for “stadium food”, providing basic concessions, such as hot dogs, Crackerjacks, and other familiar game foods (try “tailgating” with your party guests in your driveway). Another idea is to serve whatever foods your or the birthday kid would like, but named with sports-themed monikers (meatballs = “Spicy Soccer balls”, breadsticks = “Bready Baseball Bats”). Lastly, find fun ways to display your party food, whether in unique sports-themed containers (bowls sitting in upside-down helmets or baseball gloves).
Ideas for sports-themed cakes – The greatest convenience for any amateur baker when making a homemade sports-themed birthday cake, is that most sports balls are round (just like a cake!). Try frosting a round cake to look like a baseball, basketball, soccer ball, golf ball, etc., or bake individual cupcakes and decorate to look like sports balls (look for specialty sports-themed cupcake liners in stores). For a less-work option, top simply-frosted cupcakes with sporty cupcake toppers. If your kids are crazy about a particular sports team, try decorating a birthday cake with the team logo (edible image sheets can be found online and in stores). If baking isn’t your thing, you can – of course – purchase a store-made sports-themed cake.
Sports-themed party games and activities – With a group of sporty party-going kids, any physically active, somewhat-competitive activity will be welcomed. If your party is broadly sports-themed (rather than a specific sport), take your group bowling, miniature golfing, to the driving range or batting cages (look for group or party discounts). For at-home party games, host your own miniature backyard Olympics with different events for kids to participate in (have party-goers split into different teams or countries); award medals at the end.
For sports-specific parties, investigate taking your party-goers to a local high school game, minor league or local professional game. Or, if they’d rather participate than watch, host your party at a local park or ball field, and set up your own game with your guests.
Ideas for sports-themed party favors – Party favors don’t have to be bags full of candy and knick-knacks; athletic kids will love foam hands they can use to cheer with at their next game, or reusable water bottles they can take to their next practice. Look into providing vouchers, tickets or coupons for return visits to venues such as miniature golf, bowling, or batting cages.
Throwing a sports-themed kids birthday party can be easy, fun, and completely affordable. Got any other unique, creative, or athletic party ideas to add to our list? Leave your ideas in the comments below.
