Ice cube trays (regular or special-shaped)
Foods, such as fruits, cold cuts, cheese, and cake
There’s only so much that you can do with ice cubes, right? You can make ordinary ones, colored ones, shaped ones, and ones that contain edible flowers or fruits. But that’s about it. Of course, you can do much more when you use the ice cube trays in other ways. Use one to organize small earrings and rings; use another to display a collection of thimbles. One of my favorite ways to use an ice cube tray – and it might become a favorite of yours – is to make ice cube tray appetizers. Whether you’re serving fruit, sandwiches, or desserts, the trays give you a way to shape the bite size treats, and act as serving trays as well. Although ice cube trays can feature large compartments, or much smaller ones, your best choice for appetizers are the trays that have compartments at least as large as those in an ordinary ice tray.
One way to use an ice cube tray to make appetizers is to just start stacking things in each section of the tray. Stack a banana slice, a strawberry slice, and a blueberry, or just a couple of melon chunks. The arrangement is up to you. When you’re finished, insert a toothpick into each stack.
Make perfect little sandwiches, tiny cakes, and more, by first making one ice cube. Remove it from the tray, lay it on a piece of parchment paper, and quickly draw around it. Cut the shape to be the tiniest bit smaller, and use it as a pattern to cut the foods that you want to use.
Using the pattern, cut shapes of bread, cold cuts, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, or other goodies. Stack them to make sandwiches in the ice cube trays. For dessert, stack cake squares, frosting layers, and fruit toppings. Or, cut snack cake pieces, put them in the ice cube tray sections, and drizzle with chocolate sauce.
There are so many different types of appetizers, snacks, and desserts, that can be made with ice cube trays. Try making tiny, soft shell tacos, little sloppy Joes, doughnut pieces with sauce drizzled over them, soft cookies with a candy on each one, cinnamon rolls, wonton-wrapped meatballs, and many others.
The tiny, ice cube tray foods are adorable at a party but could also be used just to surprise your family. Create a tray for each person, featuring a section or two with appetizers in them, two or three sections with fruits, and a couple of sections that have tiny sandwiches. Oh yeah, don’t forget to make a couple of desserts in each tray!
