Are you tired of dragging that darn hose around the different areas of your yard? I used to spend hours every other night watering my lawn, flowerbeds, and garden.
Finally, my husband the plumber decided to install our own automated sprinkler system. I thought what a great idea, right? Well, I assumed because he was a plumber, he would know all there is to know about everything plumbed. I guess the old adage of “You know what assume means…” definitely applied in this case.
We mapped it out, made lists of all supplies needed and assumed we had covered all the rules for digging trenches. It looked like this project could be done in a just a few hours and therefore we only needed to rent the trencher for the four-hour minimum. So, they started digging trenches and abruptly hit the water main.
It was then that he announced in front of everyone, “Oh yeah, you were supposed to call the City and have them come out and locate and paint mark all the pipelines.” First, I had no idea I was supposed to call anyone and secondly, he worked for the City.
I ended up taking back the trencher, which I could not get a refund on, and buying repair parts for the water main. Then, we had to wait until the following Friday for the City to come out and Saturday to rent the trencher again. Therefore, round two- Saturday morning we began again.
They finally finished the trenches and began to install all the pipes when we discovered that he had listed the wrong size on the connector parts. Now, we all know the fault lies not with the one who orders the wrong parts but the idiot who paid for them apparently. You guessed it, back to the store I went.
I returned the trencher and exchanged all the parts but instead of going home, I treated myself to lunch. I figured that since I am to blame for all the wrongs I would do something right and right then I was hungry.
I finally cooled off and returned home whereby we finished without further incident. However, my husband learned a very valuable lesson that day, never blame your wife for things she did not do or you might have to make your own meals.
