You need to become tough from the first day if you want to control your kid’s TV viewing. It is easy for you to relax later after setting up the rules than relaxing from day one; just like it is to feed an 18-month toddler. Here are some guidelines on how you can help your kids to view television wisely.
Set a limit to the amount of television your kids watch. In case your kid is below 2 years, try and ensure that he/she watches television. If children below 2 years must watch, ensure that they watch with 10 to 15 minutes break slots. For children between the age of 2 to 3 years, one hour a day is good enough, especially for a toddler who is active. Put your television off during feeding time and bedtime.
You have to make sure that your kids are watch appropriate programs rather than just watching the television. Use the listings on TV to select what your kids will watch. A warning five minutes before the program ends will give your toddler time to get ready for the next activity. Remember to choose program that are calm and quiet. A slow paced viewing is essential for your kid because it gives him time to understand what he is watching and absorb it. Research has shown that children who watch violence TV program tend to showcase violence behaviors.
It is important for you to watch television with your kids when possible. A study carried out recently categorized children in three categories: those who have unlimited access to the TV, those who have reasonable access but do not watch with their parents and those with reasonable access and they watch with their parents. The last category above marked a hiker academic performance compared to the other two groups. There are such times when you have to use the TV as a babysitter; however, your absence means that you do not care about what they watch. If you have some work to do like sorting out laundry, just bring in the basket to the living room and work from there as you watch with them.
Educated your kids
You can explain to your kid whatever is going on in a certain program as you watch together. Clarify the difference between the program and adverts. This is essential in encouraging your child to ask questions and be able to relate the program with their own life. You could also tape the program with a VCR then they can watch later. This gives you the chance to pause whenever you please and discuss with them.
