You yearn for a different makeup look and have considered blue lipstick; however, you want to look like your favorite pop star, not Effie Trinket (à la Hunger Games)! There is no doubt that blue lipstick isn’t for everyone, but many people can wear it successfully. Fortunately, there is more than one way to wear blue lipstick. As a makeup artist, I have had the opportunity to work with blue lip colors frequently. Here are some techniques I suggest.
Bold Blue Lips
If you’ve got a nice, natural lip pout, you can wear blue lipstick like a pro without much preparation. Remember that darker colors, like burgundy or need tend to make the lips look smaller. If you have skinny lips, prep the lips with lip scrub or a lip plumper then follow all the steps below for perfectly chic color.
- Prime lips with lip primer or foundation. Give that color a chance to shine! Primer enhances color and keeps it from shifting around.
- Line the lips with a neutral lip liner. Small lips? Line just outside the natural lip line to give the illusion of larger lips.
- Apply lip color precisely with a lip brush. Rolling on the color can be a bit haphazard. Use a brush for accurate distribution.
- Finish with a clear lip gloss. Personally, I prefer the long lasting kind that stays in place, even if you take a sip from a Cosmo.
Which blue lip should I pick? Like red lipstick, blues come in a variety of shades too. One thing you won’t find is a “warm” blue lipstick; however, you can find electric or neon blue, blue-purples and even blue with sparkle.
If you’d like to use blue lipstick but aren’t sold on the idea of a complete “blue” makeover, wear this color beneath your favorite red, pink or mauve. This lush shade deepens any warm lipstick color.
With a bit of experimentation, you can find the perfect blue lip color for that party or occasion. Don’t be afraid to go blue!
