My husband’s family has been having hypothyroidism since forever. My mother-in-law and my husband (her son) and my sister-in-law (her daughter) suffer from hypothyroidism. It is a disease that doesn’t just go away with treatment; you can only keep it under control with proper medication and exercise caution. Hypothyroidism is the thyroid disease where the thyroid gland secretes less than normal levels of TSH or other thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones are required for the body for regulation of metabolism.
The medicines that are available in market for treating hypothyroidism are medicines that have higher content of iodine and synthetic thyroid hormones. My husband’s family has been using the thyroid medication for a long time now. But it can become a nuisance when you have to take a tablet every single day. So these days, we are trying to implement alternative treatments for hypothyroidism so that we can remove the dependency he has on the medication –
Naturally supplementing – We take great care in controlling the diet to keep hypothyroidism under control. We avoid the following vegetables – cauliflower, beetroot, cabbage, spinach and radishes. Such vegetables are called goitrogens which interfere with thyroid function. These can be consumed but in moderation. We regulate our caffeine intake – only one cup of light tea and absolutely no coffee. My husband also stays clear of refined flour as much as he can. Usually thyroid disease leads to high cholesterol so my husband is very wary of his diet and eats consciously. He also follows it up with regular exercise to avoid the body going into a slump.
Vitamin supplements – My husband takes vitamin supplements as much as possible. Fish oil supplements are recommended and my husband takes one capsule every day. Similarly taking vitamin supplements for vitamin D, iodine etc. can help in reducing the symptoms. Eating food such as fish, flaxseed and walnuts help in thyroid functioning.
Rest up – People who suffer from hypothyroidism are plagued with fatigue. It is very important for such people to get their 8 hours of sleep in the night and to follow the schedule properly. Also it is important for them to avoid stress as much as possible since stress can trigger the hypothyroidism.
