Many entrepreneurs like to reinvent themselves. When I think of reinventing yourself, to me it means, being the architect of your own vision and taking control of your future. Why is it important to do so over and over again? The world is changing around us, and I think to stay fresh we all of us have to keep learning new things. Whether it’s a new language, a new skill we can use in the work place, or taking a writing class. We all have to stay fresh and current.
Now I say we should all learn to think like entrepreneurs. Let me explain just what I mean by that. When I think about how an entrepreneur thinks, entrepreneurs embrace failure, they tolerate ambiguity and uncertainty. They are self motivated. I think all of us, today, have to think like an entrepreneur whether it’s in our own business, a large organization, or a non-profit.
How can networking help us get started? I think networking is really important, because you have to get out and meet other people. And I often say you can start by doing something with your church, or a charity that you feel passionate about. It’s a great way to meet people and to develop new skill sets. So, for example, I know a woman who is an accountant and she had often wanted to work for a non-profit organization. She joined the budget and finance committee of a local non-profit, and that way got experience in how the non-profit world was different. She got credibility there, and was able to segue into a whole different phase of her career.
What if you’re happy the way you are? A lot of people are happy the way they are, and I think that’s okay but I think the risk is, you may think you’re happy today because you’re unwilling to take the risk to try something new which could make you even happier tomorrow. That takes guts, doesn’t it?
We need to stay motivated and keep pushing. It is hard to keep pushing because there’s some days you know it’s hard to get out of bed. You don’t want to just try something new because it takes a lot of energy. One thing that’s worked for me is having a group of friends who support you and help you and hold you accountable. You would need to meet with your group of friends on a regular basis and you can each share what your goals are for the next phase of your lives and a time line for getting these things done. Then the group should hold you accountable for doing what you say you’re going to do.
