“A fool learns from his own mistakes, but a wise man will learn from the mistakes of others” is a famous quote by Otto Von Bismark. How to start a successful blog can be learned from observing the success of others.
Marcus Taylor of Venture Harbour wrote a detailed analysis about how to start a successful blog with six companies as the basis for its analysis, including Mashable, ProBlogger, and KISSmetrics. All of which progressed to over a million visitors within six months.
Through research, digital marketing firms Venture Harbour and Single Grain have join forces in analyzing some important concepts that makes these blogs stand out from others.
Posting persistently is vital. The founder of Mashable.com, Pete Cashmore worked 20 days composing content for his website. From the blog archives, it can be seen that he consistently wrote one to five articles every day. In addition, ProBlogger’s archives reflect similar publishing results.
It is well known that the more quality material that is published on your blog, the quicker it will grow. What is even more important than frequency is persistence. The founder of ProBlogger states, “The key to successful blogging is regular and consistent blogging over an extended period of time.”
All of the blogs that were analyzed persistently posted content for a prolonged time period.
It is important to understand that 20 percent creates 80 percent of the results. Vilfredo Pareto’s law explains that 80 percent of the effects are typically the result of 20 percent of the cause. With blogging, 80 percent of your visitors will normally come from 20 percent of your material.
KISSmetrics understood that infographics were the most effective content. As a result, it posted over 47 articles within two years about the topic, generating over 2.5 million site visitors, and 41,000 inbound links from 3,700 unique domains.
It is far more difficult to start a successful blog today. Mashable and Cashmore started when social media was up and coming. ProBlogger was created when blogging was emerging. Many of the successful blogs we know of are prospering largely due to their timing.
Creating a Niche
Creating a niche is one way of obtaining success today. There are unlimited niches that are available for grabs. Peep Laja expanded ConversionXL to over 100,000 monthly visitors in a year by selecting a very specific niche and becoming known for being the best blog on that topic.
In the long run, useful content normally beats viral content. It is important to have content that will engage readers and not cause them to abruptly leave your site. A high bounce rate is not good for any site. When analyzing the high traffic blogs, it was clear that it was rare for blogs to become viral hits.
Remember, building traffic will take time. Rome was not built in a day, but the time can be reduced through careful planning. Being patient, focused, and persistent is how to start a successful blog.
