We’ve been getting a lot of questions lately from job seekers who are applying to jobs outside of the area in which they live. When asked why, they’re telling us it’s because they are planning to move to that location.
Searching for a job when you know you will be relocating can be tricky. Many hiring managers see a red flag when a resume comes across their desk where the applicant is from another state. It’s risky for them to take the time to set up an interview with someone from a different area; they may not show up or may not be able to make it.
If you know you are moving
Explain your situation in a cover letter. Let them know that you will soon be moving to their area and you can be available when needed. When you call to follow up on the application, explain your situation in a little more detail and give the exact dates you will be moving in to town. Make sure you emphasize that you can make it in for an interview (if that’s the case) and that you are taking your job search seriously.
If you are thinking about moving
Some of our members have asked us about what to say when they are looking for a job in a different area, but are only planning on moving if they get the job. Explain in a cover letter that you are planning to relocate to their area and stay away from getting into any specifics about your situation. You’ll want to make it as easy to possible for them to interview and hire you, and if you tell them you are just thinking about moving it may scare them away. When you call to follow up, focus on the fact that you will be moving to their area and steer the conversation to your strengths as an employee.
A cover letter, solid references and assurance that you will be there will all be very powerful in searching for a job in a different area.
