You can singlehandedly ruin your entire fantasy baseball league by what you do with your team. This is a real bridge-burner which will make the other general managers absolutely hate you, but for anyone thinking about losing some friends here are a few obnoxious strategies you could implement.
You can ruin the entire season immediately at the draft. The best way to do this is to draft players at only one position. I call this a “hostage draft” where you select only catchers and then insist that you are doing it to later trade them to teams desperate for a quality backstop. This of course is a poor strategy because there are enough players at any position to make up for the fact that you only have players at one spot.
A less fun way to ruin the season through the draft is to select the worst players available. Immediately everyone will know that you are not taking things seriously and anyone who players you more than they play the other teams will pick up extra wins, ergo an unbalanced schedule. The league commissioner will become desperate to replace you.
Making trade proposals that would never work is a great way to get on everyone’s nerves. Unfortunately most people who do this only have the best intentions in mind and think Mike Trout for Jimmy Rollins and Grant Balfour is a fair trade because it’s 2-for-1. If you intend on suggesting bad trades on purpose you will not ruin the season, but you will cause a lot of aggravation to the other players which makes things less fun.
For those able to find a partner in crime you could always trade the best players onto one of the teams and build up a mega-team. Everyone will notice this immediately and will disallow the trades. All you have to do is stop playing after that. In a free league is easy to do and causes more harm to everyone else than it does to you.
Giving up on your fantasy baseball season makes you the Houston Astros of the league, although their losing was more for financial reasons. Hopefully you didn’t pay more than a few dollars toward your league if you decide to stop setting your lineup. Sadly almost every league has someone who gives up early on and becomes an automatic win for anyone who plays them. This ends up affecting the playoff picture a lot which is why it’s the perfect and simplest way to ruin the league without having to do anything at all.
If you want to ruin the season while keeping some integrity, dominate the league and make the season so brutal for the other teams because you just happen to be better than everyone else.
