Terra cotta is the color of a clay flowerpot. It is a commonly used color in home décor. Any type of décor scheme will blend perfectly with terra cotta whether it be floral, country, modern, or rustic. Shades or red and orange are feel good colors. They are warm, friendly, and inviting. The colors are bright and bold but they do not make the room feel any smaller like some darker colors can. In fact they actually make the room feel larger.
The first thing you will want to do is to remove everything from the room. It can be very difficult to refinish bedroom walls with the bed and dressers in the way. The room should be completely empty. Once it has been cleared out lay down plastic or painters tarps to protect your flooring. Use painters tape to cover all trim and anything else that you don’t want painted.
Use a pole sander and medium grit sandpaper to sand each wall. What this does is removes and burrs or drips from the old finish. Sand every square inch of each wall in the bedroom. If you miss any spots it will be very noticeable when your new finish is applied.
Once the walls have been sanded check them over carefully for little holes that should be filled in. Look for cracks as well. Use sheetrock mud to fill in all cracks and holes. Fill a small pan with mud and use a sheetrock knife to apply the mud with. Get a little roll of mud on the edge of your knife then carefully smooth it over the hole or crack. Remove excess mud from the knife then scrape the spot you mudded to remove excess mud from the wall. Once you have repaired all holes and cracks let the mud dry for 2 hours. Lightly sand the mudded spots then wipe all of the walls down using a dry cloth.
When the bedroom walls are free from dust it is time to move on to the next step. Paint primer should be applied to each wall. Primer seals the wood or sheetrock and gives the new color a surface it can properly adhere to. Pour the primer into a clean paint tray. Use a roller and an extend a pole to apply the primer to each wall. Use a small paint brush to get the corners and edges. Allow the first coat 2 hours to dry then apply a second. Let the second coat of primer dry overnight.
The next morning you can begin to apply the terra cotta, red or orange paint. Use latex paint in the shade you have chosen. Use a paint stick to stir the color well. Pour the paint into a clean paint tray and apply the first coat. Use the extend a pole and a clean roller to apply the paint just as you did for the primer. Let the first coat dry for 1 hour then apply a second. Let the second coat dry for a couple of hours then apply a third. Allow the third coat o dry over night. The next morning go back into the bedroom and remove the painters tape. Clean up all messes and pick up the plastic and tarps. Vacuum the room well then bring your furniture back in. Enjoy the new look!
