We’ve all been there. We decide we can redecorate our home in an afternoon without the help of a professional. If you aren’t experienced in redecorating, this is a bad idea. Here are some tips from my personal experience to guide you in the right direction. The last thing you want is to end up frustrated and disappointed after all of your hard work.
Calculate your budget and stick to it
Hire a professional experienced in the particular job you have planned
Don’t try to do too much – pick one project and concentrate on doing your best
- If you notice mistakes, stop immediately and correct it before moving on
If you stay within 10% of your budget, you allow for any miscellaneous items you may need along the way. Try to purchase all supplies at one time so you’ll know which projects you can afford to tackle, and which will have to wait. Running out of money with only part of each room completed is never fun. Trust me!
Hire a professional if you can. If it’s not in the budget, request a free estimate anyway to get advice and ideas. Explain your plans and listen to their feedback.
You can’t redecorate the whole house in an afternoon. Pick one area at a time and make sure you will be happy with your results for many years. I decided to tile the kitchen and bathroom floors and also paint my living room in one afternoon. Somehow the wrong color of grout was used in the bathroom. I tried to cover the black grout with white and ended up with a sort of gray color. After the paint dried in the living room, it was not the color I had envisioned. I fixed this with a trick I heard about. I used a new kitchen sponge, dipped it in a different color of paint, which I had used for the trim, and dabbed it all over the pink walls. This toned it down and it looked much better. If you correct mistakes as soon as they are discovered, you won’t continue to use the wrong grout or paint all of your walls a hot pink like I did.
I went over budget purchasing additional grout and paint. It also took three days rather than just an afternoon, because I tried to do too much at once.
A majority of your life is spent in your home. You should enjoy it and be proud, not embarrassed, when you have a visitor. It is worth saving for a few extra months so you can hire a professional to guide you through it. Most likely you will end up saving money and have far better results.
