Planning your career is a task that is well worth your time because it sets you on the path that will lead you to where ever you would like to go. The following exercise provides you with a lot of clarity in regards to your career goals and is best done before you begin your job searching.
A lot of the time most people get themselves stuck at the very start of the planning process. There appear to be far too many choices that are lunging themselves at you. Naturally feelings of inner doubt might come in at this stage. Am I good enough for that? you may ask yourself, or how do I become a success at this? After some thought over many different career paths, you may find yourself worried, that none of these careers are suitable for you.
This is where a little bit of career planning comes in handy. There are two ways of beginning. One is to find out what you really like to do and pursue it purely for the financial gain you may acquire, the second is to find out what really motivates you, find out which among the careers gives you what you want on an emotional level, and start heading towards it. Either way you will get what you want – The first one you may burn yourself out fast, though create larger wealth, the second is more about finding something that satisfies you emotionally and that you truly love.
Whatever path you desire to take, it is crucial to know your individual strengths and weaknesses. Sit down and assess yourself in an honest manner. Think of all your achievements, of all the compliments you received, of all the work that really drove and inspired you, of the times when you worked with great passion, write all of these down. You will find that as you note down your success’s, your achievements, a pattern will come to light. You may find that you are good at organizing, at putting people at ease, at leadership, at solving problems at physical tasks, at creating music or playing video games. Each of these represents an option for a career or a number of attributes that sets you apart from everyone else.
Now make a list of things that motivate you, that you aspire for, your dreams and vision, these are the things you want more than anything else in the world. Find your position between the person you are and the dreams you wish to achieve and become. As this picture gets more and more clearer you become more self aware, confident and inspired. Attributes that serve you well along your journey. You have now created and hopefully become a sharp picture of yourself with specific saleable attributes and qualities.
Based on the level of your aspiration and your personal aptitude, you can also identify the careers that offer the kind of lifestyle that you wish, If you wish to become a world traveller and be in command of your own exciting business you can research careers in marketing with a goal to set up your own firm or to be in charge of a large company. The same may not be possible if you prefer to paint or write for long hours.
It is best to have brutal honesty with yourself at this stage in the process, because most people take decisions based on exciting misconceptions about certain types of career and change them at a later date. Once deciding on a particular direction, build up your competencies and educate yourself. Specific careers need specific education. Whichever area you choose to pursue, you will do very well if you desire to be the best in it. Leave your individual stamp on it. Learn what you need to know by acquiring information, by taking up training, and enrolling in courses, by learning the ins and outs of the job, by adding a special set of skills that help in handling the job with superior proficiency.
All jobs without exception would certainly require a good sense of verbal communication and writing skills so please go and work on that, a pleasing and well-mannered character, a superior work ethic and good inter-personal ability. Work on these key skills along with planning your chosen career.
