My best friend is on a strict gluten free diet, and as a result she spends a lot of money on a special brand of gluten free non-stick cooking spray. Really, there is no need to do so, you can make your own in mere seconds, and not only will it be healthier but it will save you money as well.
To make you own non-stick cooking spray you will need only two ingredients: oil and water. I personally feel that olive oil is a healthy oil, so I make mine using extra virgin olive oil. In a small spray bottle I add:
- · 1/4 cup olive oil (or oil of your choosing)
- · 1 1/4 cups water
We all know oil and water don’t mix, so every time you intend to use this to coat your pans you will need to give it a shake to mix the ingredients first. I use a spray bottle that has an adjustable head that allows me to use a misting feature, but you can buy special bottles at kitchen supply stores just for this purpose.
I feel good about using this method to coat my cookie sheets, cake pans and muffin tins because I don’t get any gunky build up on my bake ware like I do from canned cooking sprays. The brand of cooking spray I used to buy contained added ingredients such as soy lecithin, dimethyl silicon and a propellant. Do I really want those ingredients in my food? I think not.
Not only is a homemade cooking easy to make, but it is also healthy and it saves money on the grocery budget. These are great reasons to give it a try.
