Walking is a simple form of exercise suitable for most people, but it can get boring. Walking the same route each day gets old. Don’t give up your walking routine out of boredom. Spice up your walking routine with these tips.
Switch It Up
You likely have a route that is familiar and just the right length for you. But seeing the same things each time gets boring. Try a new route to make the walk more interesting. Go a different direction or drive to a different neighborhood. Or head out to a local trail to see more of nature on your walk. Even doing your regular route backward makes it feel a little different.
Is your normal walking routine getting too easy? Add a little challenge to it. Increase the distance to get more of a workout. Pick up the pace to make yourself breathe a little harder, or work in some jogging intervals. Adding in some hills is another way to challenge yourself. Look for a hilly part of town for your next walk.
Find a Friend
Chatting with a friend can make a walk pass much faster. You can also motivate each other to keep moving if you get tired. You’ll be less likely to skip a workout if your friend is waiting for you to show up. A neighborhood friend is easiest because you are already in the same spot. If your friend doesn’t live nearby, find a meeting point with good sidewalks or walking trails.
Do an Event
Sign up for a walk/run event in your community. Choose a distance you can handle safely. A 5K is a good starting point that most people in moderate shape can handle. The event gives you something to train for, which might help motivate you on your walks.
Mix It Up
There’s nothing saying you have to walk all the time. If you’re getting bored with walking, cut back to a few walks a week. Make up for the cut walks with other forms of exercise. You might enjoy your walks more. Plus you’ll work different muscle groups for some variety.
