Many people struggle to keep a clean house, with three children and three dogs; I know the challenge of keeping the house clean without spending hours per day cleaning. I am one of those people who cannot focus on anything unless I know my house is clean. We moved from a very small house to one with five bedrooms and it became evident to me very quickly I had to come up with a simple way to ensure my house was clean without spending my life cleaning.
I started to take a look at my life, I was spending forty hours a week at work, coming home helping with homework, cooking dinner and feeling totally wiped out. Then I would spend all day Saturday cleaning my house doing laundry and finishing up laundry on Sunday. I was not enjoying my life and felt like all I ever did was work. I began to look at each task and think about simple things I could change in order to have more free time and spend less time cleaning.
I began with the bathroom, I looked at it every day as the kids piled up the laundry, the sink became a gross mix of dried toothpaste and spit, and the bathtub was beginning to turn to a nice shade of grey. This room always drove me nuts so in that instant I came up with a rule for myself. Every time I leave a room I have to spend five minutes cleaning it before I can leave. Everyone can do something for five minutes and in those five minutes I knew I could make a difference.
I not only use this as a rule for the bathroom but for every room in the house. If I leave the bedroom, I spend five minutes, making the bed, picking up laundry and taking it to the laundry room, and sweeping up. When I leave the living room, I may sweep the floor, or wipe down the tables, possible fix the pillows on the couch. I do this every time I leave a room, at first you may find yourself not wanting to go into so many rooms but it quickly becomes a habit and seems like you have always done it this way.
Another thing that I changed is doing laundry through the week. I know most people have a laundry day, but with a family like mine that was just not cutting it. I found that if I simply do one load a day my weekend is not spent doing laundry any more.
Now when the weekends come I do not have to spend my days cleaning and doing laundry, sure I mop the floors, and tidy, I usually spend one or two hours a weekend making sure the house is nice but the rest of the time is mine. My house is clean all the time and I have more free time to do the things I love!
