It’s not uncommon for teenagers to want to wear makeup. Here are some tips on how to introduce makeup to your teenager.
Start with natural looking products.
There are so many great looking makeup products that look natural. I myself like using Physicians Formula because most of the makeup by this brand looks and feels natural. When teenagers first start using makeup it can be overwhelming for them and they might overdo it. I know this firsthand since I thought it was a good idea to wear thick black liquid eyeliner when I was in middle school. I mainly wore this because it was easy to apply but it made me have a rough look about me. Teaching your teenager to stick with the natural looking look is a smart idea so they get to wear makeup but not look “scary”.
Sometimes it’s not uncommon for girls to want to wear makeup to cover flaws they might have. I dealt with major acne in middle school and I sometimes ended up caking on way too much foundation trying to cover it. Again teaching your teen to blend makeup to make it appear natural can come into play if they deal with acne as well. It’s important you tell them makeup is intended to enhance their look not make them something they are not.
Let them experiment at home.
If you completely forbid them to wear certain makeup they might go behind your back and just apply the makeup at school. I saw this commonly when I was in school. Many girls would do their makeup in the bathroom before school to avoid their parents seeing it. To stop this from happening tell them to experiment at home before going out. Sometimes they really don’t know what they want and end up applying way too much makeup trying to achieve a certain look.
Do some research yourself online about makeup tutorials and suggest certain ones to your teen. If you find other teens on YouTube who make makeup tutorials pass them along to your teen. Sometimes they would rather just take advice from their peers instead of listening to what you have to say. There are so many tutorials available though that you should be able to find some that are teen friendly and that you approve.
Let them know about makeup safety.
For all ages it’s important to know about makeup safety. This includes how long you should keep makeup and how often you should wash your makeup brushes. Make sure they know about this because they may end up experiencing breakouts or even get bacteria buildup if they use dirty brushes or old makeup. Again it can be hard giving advice to your teen if they don’t want to hear what you have to say so there are other ways to get the information to them. One way is again showing them tutorials but another way is to buy them a magazine or book that explains the information that you want them to know.
