Around a year ago, I had to cut off my entire head of hair. My hair was badly damaged from all of the different products that I have been using. After I got my hair chopped, my starting hair length was 1 inch in length. Currently, my hair is 11 inches long and is in healthy condition. Hair on average grows a half an inch a month (6 inches a year). Before I begin giving you tips to grow your hair, you should first cut off any severely damaged part of your hair. It is best to start off on a clean plate. Keeping the damaged part of your hair can cause even more damage to your hair.
To begin with, you should limit the amount of heat you put on your hair. Using flat irons, curling irons, blow dryers, etc. can be very dreadful to your hair. Remember, hair is dead and you are only ruining your hair more. Limit the heat in your head to once or twice per week, at the most.
I do not support putting chemicals, dye or perms in your hair. These have harsh chemicals that can COMPLETELY ruin your hair. Also avoid using harmful shampoos and conditioners. The best types to buy are natural with no alcohol or sulfates. Using those shampoos will dry out your hair causing split end and other damage.
Use a wide tooth comb to style your hair. Be sure to start from your ends and work your way up when grooming your hair. This will decrease the amount of hair ripping. Using a small tooth comb will tear out your hair more. Brushes are also very harmful to your hair. They rip out your hair from the roots.
Make sure to keep your hair hydrated. The best way to do this is by doing a deep condition. An alternative way is to co-wash your hair (not a good idea if your hair is already oily or gets dirty a lot). Lastly, you can put natural oils in your hair. My favorite oil is 100% virgin coconut oil.
Eat a healthy diet, drink water and exercise. Keep in mind that your hair is growing out of your body. If your body is unhealthy, your hair will be too. The best food for hair is protein. Peanuts, eggs, fish, turkey breast, milk, nuts and tofu are all foods that are good for your hair and high in protein.
If your hair is still not showing the results you want then you should take vitamins or biotin to help decrease the amount of hair breaking off. This will result in longer looking hair.
