For those of us that are frequent travelers, long lines while you wait to get your luggage scanned can seem almost inevitable. While a long wait in security can put a damper on your travel, there are some ways to make the time you spend there shorter and more efficient. Not only will you breeze through with a little preparation, but hopefully those around you will follow your lead and the whole line will move faster.
Prep while you wait
If there is a very long line, get in it right away. While just standing there, you can start prepping for the line. It seems like most people don’t do anything with their bags until they are at the area where you put your things in the little plastic try, but this really holds up the line. Take a look at your bag when you’re standing in line and remove anything that shouldn’t be there. Did you forget a half-drunk bottle of water? Take it out now, instead of waiting. This is also a great time to remove your laptop from your bag, because you know you’re going to have to do it anyway. You can also remove your jacket, belt and heavy jewelry. This way, when you finally get to the front of the line, you’ll be ready.
Place your things in the bin
Because you have already taken everything out of your bag that needed to be taken out, you’re pretty much ready to go through. There may be lots of people in front of you removing jackets and digging thorough their bags. If you can get to a bin, it’s not rude to simply say excuse me and step in front of those who are not ready. If you need to remove your shoes, make sure that you do so a little bit to the side and not in front of the bins or counters so that others can get around you if they have already done the same.
Get through the metal detectors
Before you even step towards them, take one final moment to think about metal on your body. Is there anything in your pockets? Are you holding your cell phone? Having to go through the detector twice because you forgot something takes a lot more time than stepping back and putting something extra in the bin.
Collect your things
You do not have to put everything back on and in its proper place while standing right next to the belt. You can collect your things, and step aside while doing so. Not only is it more comfortable because its less crowded, but you’re not holding up the people behind you by doing so.
Now that you’ve gone through security as fast as you can, it’s time to go enjoy some overpriced airport terminal food and people watch while you wait for boarding.
