2014 hair colors are so bold and daring. One of these hot color trends is blue. To make this beautiful shade more extravagant, add glitter (like Demi Lovato debuted on the X Factor).
Being a beautician, I have a very strong feeling this trend with glitter added to neon hair colors will rock throughout the new year, especially in the summer. How cool would electric blue with pink glitter look? Or maybe neon pink with silver glitter? This could be quite catchy.
Here is how to get this edgy and fun look. Remember though, you don’t have to buy permanent hair color. You can try out semi or the demi first to make sure you like the shade.
Make sure your hair is light enough
When choosing a neon or pastel color, your hair has to be lighter. Most people feel they need to bleach their hair out first, but that’s not necessarily the case. As long as your hair is at least a light brown color, the blue or pastel will show up. The color just won’t be as vivid if you go the no-bleach route.
Choose your blue
If you want the exact color as Demi, choose electric azure. Brands such as Ion Color Brilliance or Manic Panic might carry this shade.
Prep your skin and clothing
Whenever you are coloring your hair, you need to make sure the hair dye doesn’t get onto your clothes or skin. Beauticians always use petroleum jelly on the hairline, behind the neck, and near the ears to prevent the color from staining. However, when using pastel (or certain shades, like blue), the petroleum jelly will rip away some of the color during the process. In those areas, the shade will be slightly different from the rest of the hair. Use tape or cotton instead if you wish to avoid this. Always make sure to wear gloves for your hands. Wrap a few towels around applicable areas to protect your clothing.
Applying the hair color and making sure you have even coverage
Usually when you color your hair, you start at the roots first. Then, add the color to the ends the last 15 minutes. But with dramatic colors, I like to apply the color at least an inch away from the roots, working the color down the rest of my hair until the ends. Once the ends are totally saturated, go back to the roots and cover them completely. This way you get even coverage without blotching or striping.
Allow the color to stay on for at least an hour. I know this sounds long to some people, but when you use colors like blue, you can actually leave them on for 3-4 hours without damaging the hair. Exotic colors generally contain different ingredients than typical hair dyes.
A few great tips to help achieve Demi’s hair
After you apply the color onto the entire head, cover it with a color-processing cap and apply heat. Either sit under a professional dryer or hold a hairdryer up to your head for about 10 minutes. This will help lock and seal the color in, but also makes the color more bold. Rinse out with cold water.
Style your hair into a faux undercut by sweeping all of your hair on one side to the other. Take some gold glitter and apply to the one side. About a 2-2 1/2 section should be enough. Spray the hair to make sure it stays in place and have fun with your new pastel blue look.
