You can’t do much about the sweaty armpits or a nervous grin but you can fake confidence with practice. Confidence is the appearance that you have everything under control and you know what you are talking about. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Fake it until you make it,” especially if you’ve ever worked in sales. As a former sales director, I know that this old adage is true but you have to be specific about what you fake. Introducing a topic of conversation that you nothing about is definitely not a good way to promote confidence in your abilities.
Fake self-confidence by remembering the following keys:
Confident people look confident. If you want to appear self-assured, you must look neat. Wear clothing that you makes you feel sure of yourself. Clothing that is too big or too tight is a distraction. Invest in a few power suits!
Confident people avoid gossip. People who are sure of themselves don’t need to talk themselves up by gossiping about others. Stay positive and surround yourself with positive people.
Fake confidence by remaining calm and quiet. Self-possessed folks don’t feel the need to fill every silent gap with talk. Stay quiet when you need to and as they say, “Never let them see you sweat!” Don’t be stressed out; at least not in front of folks.
Show enthusiasm for a subject you are knowledgeable about. You may have to show some control here but when the conversation moves to a subject you know about, don’t be afraid to talk about what you do. Keep in mind that you should show genuine interest in others when they share their knowledge.
Appreciate yourself. You are the only you there is. Having a healthy appreciation for what makes you unique will go a long way
Be a better planner. When you have to run around looking for your shoes or a briefcase, it’s easy to feel rushed and unprepared. Get some self-confidence by planning ahead for events and meetings. It will make a difference!
