Badass ranks in Borderlands 2 are the only way to improve the stats of all of your characters at the same time. These ranks turn into badass tokens which can then be spent on stat bonuses that apply to your entire account. This is a great benefit that has only one downside. Badass ranks can be very slow to acquire, especially if you aren’t familiar with the tricks for getting them quickly. The following guide will help speed you gain badass ranks quickly in Borderlands 2.
Bullymongs – After you meet Sir Hammerlock and unlock the town, you can get a whole bunch of badass ranks quickly. Scavenge the town for guns and ammo and then head down to the bullymong cave right near Sir Hammerlock. You need to do two things here: kill bullymongs and shoot ice rocks out of the air. The second is a little more difficult than the first, but you can easily retreat to the town, reload, and heal up if you get into any danger. Once you have killed all the bullymongs return to town to sell weapons, heal up, and refill ammo. When you return, the bullymongs should have respawned. Alternately, you can reset the game to respawn them as well. Farm this area for about an hour and you will gain badass ranks for the following challenges: Bully the Bullies, Hurly Burly, Gun Runner, and Wholesale. That is a lot of challenges for only one area.
Loot the Town – If you are willing to reset the game a few times, you can farm the town by the bullymongs very effectively. Each time you reset the game, all of the items drops reset. Run around town looting everything that can open. Sell it all to the shop and then use the money you earn to buy the item of the day, whatever it is. The item of the day will usually be a lot cheaper if it is a grenade or shield than if it is a weapon. If you are willing to devote about an hour to this, you will earn badass ranks for Limited-Time Offer, Wholesale, Open Pandora’s Boxes, Another Man’s Treasure, Gun Runner, and It’s Not Easy Looting Green. Killing bullymongs is more fun and earns experience at the same time, but this gives you better rewards overall.
Marauders and Psychos – Just before you face Boom and Bewm, you will have to go through a bottleneck with roughly a dozen Marauders. This location has really good cover and you can easily defeat them all with hit and run tactics. Once you defeat them, run over to the next area where Boom and Bewm are. Keep cover between you and the turret gun while killing off the first wave of Psychos that charge you. You should kill about half a dozen and then jump off the cliff on the left. Return to the Marauders, which have respawned and repeat the process. This will give you good progress on the Marauder? I Hardly Know ‘Er and Mama’s Boys challenges.
Drive Like a Maniac – Once you reach Pandora, jump in a vehicle and go back the way you came from. There is a nearby ice field with bullymong running around. Shoot them and ram then with the vehicle until they are all dead. Then either go through the nearby gates. Ram and shoot all the nearby skags. Once they are dead, return through the gate and continue the process. This will net you badass ranks for Skags to Riches, Hit and Fun, Turret Syndrome, and Bully the Bullies, if you haven’t already maxed it out.
Return to Basics – After having fun with vehicles, return to Sanctuary and purchase a few key items. You want a shield a nova shield and a spike shield. Keep resetting the game until they are available for purchase. Also get a good spread of weapons, preferably ones you haven’t been using much during the game. Now teleport back to the first town of the game where you first met Sir Hammerlock. The enemies here are now much weaker than you. Put on a spike shield or nova shield and let them kill themselves on your shield. You can pretty much walk away from your game and do something else while this is happening if you are high enough level. After about half and hour to an hour, switch shields and then return to you other activity. After you have gotten good progress on Game of Thorns and Super Nova, pull out a weapon and start killing enemies quickly. Buy ammo when you need it and don’t switch weapons. The goal is to get one of the weapon challenges maxed out. Since enemies die more quickly here, you get badass ranks more quickly. If you are working on a sniper rifle, don’t bother using the scope unless you need to for a specific challenge. It does plenty of damage without the scope. Finally, if your action skill can be used conveniently, spend about half an hour killing enemies while it is active. This should earn you ranks from Afternoon Delight, …I Got to Boogie, a few weapon based challenges, and possibly …To Pay the Bills.
A Little Help From Your Friends – The last way to quickly get badass ranks is to find a friend that also plays Borderlands 2, preferably one who is way ahead of you in the game. Start a multiplayer game with that friend and trade items up to 50 times. You can trade the same items over and over if you want. Then pool all of your money and your friend’s money. If it is enough, you will get For The Hoard! Jump in a car together and sit in the passenger seat. Start killing enemies for the Passive Aggressive challenge. Finally, get into a bunch of duels and have your friend lose intentionally. After 50, you will have the Haters Gonna Hate challenge completed.
