Will Americans ever have to defend their homeland against foreign invaders? It’s unlikely. But, as America and western Europe lose military strength, the world will become more unpredictable. Foreign powers may become more aggressive. For example, on February 24, 2014, Fox News reported that the U.S. Department of Defense announced plans to reduce the size of the military to 440,000 service members, retire the A-10 Warthog attack jet, and trim the size of the Navy. Just four days later, Russian Leader Vladimir Putin took advantage of unrest in Ukraine and started the invasion of and annexation of the Ukrainian province of Crimea. Meanwhile, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army is building a larger and larger Navy. Is it conceivable that American citizens might have to fight foreign invaders? It’s a highly unlikely scenario since America’s military will remain the world’s most powerful for years to come, but it is interesting scenario to contemplate while reading Guns and Ammo in the bathroom.
The question remains what kinds of weapons and gear would you want for fighting foreign invaders?
Rifle. If you are going to fight foreign invaders, you’ll need a rifle. Of course, the first impulse is to run out an get a semi-automatic AR-15 or AK-47. There are lots of reasons to buy an AR-15 rifle. These military-style weapons handle well and have high capacity magazines. But, unless your neighborhood association has a stockpile of mortars, machine guns, and light anti-tank weapons, you might not want to go toe-to-toe with invading infantry formations. A traditional bolt-action hunting rifle in a common .30-06 or .308 Winchester caliber may allow you to inflict damage independently as a sniper. A hunting rifle like a Browning A-Bolt, Remington 700, Marlin XL-7 or Ruger American Rifle may work quite well. The Mossberg ATR Night Train ups the ante with a bipod, flash suppressor, and serious scope. You could shoot and scoot and leave full-on engagements to regular military units.
Handgun. Americans have plenty of military-style handguns available. Full-sized Colt 1911, Beretta 92, and Browning Hi Power pistols provide military calibers and magazines. But, as a partisan, you may want something small, powerful, and very concealable like a 9mm Beretta Nano or Kimber Solo. By going with something deeply concealable, you may be able to strike individual occupying soldiers rather than full-strength units.
Knife. Everyone loves that Crocodile Dundee movie line “That’s not a knife. This is a knife.” There are plenty of K-bar fighting knives or even big fixed-blade hunting knives like my Buck 119 Hunting Knife. Even the $8 Gordon hunting/survival knife from Harbor Freight Tools might work well in knife fight. But, as a partisan, you may want to blend in with the populace. Something concealable might be a better option. I think a folding knife like my black Kershaw 1550ST Black Out might be a great choice. You can hide it in a pocket until a drunken occupying soldier stumbles down your alley.
First Aid Kit. Since invaders typically bring artillery, tanks, helicopters, and more to a meeting, you’ll probably need something more than the $10 first aid kit from the drugstore can provide. You can buy an military Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) on Amazon.com. It’s a fully-stocked first aid kit that includes Quik-Clot for around $50. Of course, if you are part of a partisan band, you may want to get a larger and even better equipped military medics kit. The Elite Fully-Stocked GI Issue Medic First Aid Kit Bag might be a better, but bulkier, deal for just under $150 on Amazon.com.
Uniform. If you are going to be a partisan, you’ll need to get some appropriately camouflaged clothing and some sort of national flag patch to go on it. At least, you should if you want to be treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention upon your capture. Of course, that’s why America has BassPro Shops. You can get some good turkey hunting camouflage that is perfectly suited to your part of the country.
Of course, all of these purchases would make you look a bit weird. Fortunately, it is highly unlikely that a foreign Army will ever invade the United States. We still have the world’s most advanced military. Besides, all the jogging, push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups required to run from young soldiers is painful to contemplate. Thankfully, we can all rest easy. Now, zombies might be another matter!
