The Iron Patriot alternate costume makes War Machine one of the most difficult PvP enemies in Marvel: Avengers Alliance. The costume gives him nearly unprecedented alpha strike potential, even putting Thor to shame. If you aren’t prepared for such an alpha strike, it is often impossible to recover. Even if you are prepared, you will likely be fighting at a disadvantage. If, like many players in the game, you are losing to him more often than you are winning, the following strategy guide will teach you how to defeat Iron Patriot in PvP in Marvel: Avengers Alliance.
Opening Salvo – Due to random chance and the eccentricities of the PvP AI, you can’t be certain what Iron Patriot will do in the first round of battle, but over half the time he starts with a particular one-two punch. First he uses Full Overcharge to power up and then he attacks all enemies with 21-Gun Salute. This deals critical hit damage on three salvos and applies three stacks of radiation exposure. If you manage to act before him, either exhaustion or blind rage will stop this combo. Alternately, you can just stun him and hope to defeat him before his second round. The impaired condition is your next best option. Finally, even just weakening him before he attacks will help reduce the danger.
Healing – Since you can’t assume that one of your characters capable of preventing his salvo will act before him, you should use healing after his salvo. Healing is useful in general, but it is darn near critical if Iron Patriot is common in your metagame. The Scroll of Angolob is also really handy to remove the ongoing damage. But, you don’t have to rely on you agent if you don’t want to. Both Omega Sentinel and Heroic Age Iron Fist can heal the entire team and remove all negative status effects. Similarly, while it isn’t technically healing, shields will effectively provide the same benefit.
Heroic Age Iron Fist – This hero is easily the best counter in the game for Iron Patriot. Besides the healing and status effect removal he can offer, he has a chance of preventing two thirds of the damage from the original opening salvo by interrupting the follow-up attacks of 21-Gun Salute. And, if he does prevent them, he will also deal damage to Iron Patriot. Heroic Age Iron Fist is a solid PvP hero normally, but if you are really having difficulty with Iron Patriot, he becomes your best option by far.
Overheated – Assuming you survive the opening salvo, you gain one major advantage. Iron Patriot will spend the following round doing nothing but recharging. You can stun him before or after he recharges and effectively cause him to lose the second and third round of combat. Take advantage of this downtime to focus on one of the other two enemies and try to pair down the enemy numbers. As long as his opening salvo didn’t take out one of your team, and it generally shouldn’t, you will essentially have the equivalent of a hockey power play for a round or two. The biggest threat you need to watch out for, though, is the Shepherd’s Staff. If the opposing agent is equipped with that, Iron Patriot may act a second time before you are ready for him.
Bleeding – Iron Patriot’s best attacks all involve multiple attacks in a row. This means, even if you can’t prevent him from attacking, you can make him suffer for it. Bleeding damage is especially effective on Iron Patriot. Try to stick him with it early and watch him defeat himself as quickly as you want to defeat him.
