Ares is an incredibly common PvP hero on defensive teams in Marvel: Avengers Alliance. The main reason he appears so commonly is that he has relatively good PvP AI and a special ability that is absolutely devastating when it activates. Ares himself may not be the hardest hero to defeat, but his presence on a team often makes the team much more difficult. If, like many players in the game, you are losing to him more often than you are winning, the following strategy guide will teach you how to defeat Ares in PvP in Marvel: Avengers Alliance.
War Never Changes – By far the most dangerous feature of Ares is his War Never Changes ability. Whenever a member of his team makes a single target attack, there is a chance for one or both of the teammates to follow up that attack. Similarly whenever any member of his team is attacked, one or both teammates may counter that attack. Due to this ability, you need to be very careful when using single target attacks against any member of this team. It seems obvious that you would want to take out Ares first, but this might be lethal if the other hero on his team has a dangerous basic attack. For example, Ares teamed with Emma Frost can cause your team to all be affected by Mental Anguish. In general, you are better off using area attacks against a team with Ares and if you have to use single target attacks, only focus on Ares if the other hero has a basic attack that isn’t particularly dangerous.
Crush Your Enemies – Ares will always use this attack on the first round of battle. This means any buffs you apply before he acts will be removed. You also have a chance of your entire team being stunned, but there is nothing you can do to prevent this other than to depower Ares or hex him if you are using Scarlet Witch. The simple solution to Crush Your Enemies is to avoid using buffs until he has used this power.
Modern Warfare – If you have even the slightest bit of regeneration on your team, expect Ares to use this on the second round of battle. It will apply despair to your entire team. It can be avoided if you have evasion effects, and since he won’t use it on the first round, you can defeat him before he uses it. But, unless you are absolutely sure you can defeat him quickly, you should use any healing before his second attack. This may mean you end up wasting some healing, but it is better to waste a little healing than to have a useless power for the rest of the battle. On the flip side, save shield abilities until after he uses this attack.
Havok – If Ares is really making your life difficult and you are seeing him consistently in PvP, include Havok on your PvP team. His Plasma Spheres is an area attack so it won’t activate War Never Changes and the exhaustion it applies will prevent Personal War. Also, Havok is a blaster. Assuming you don’t mind losing a round, you can defeat easily defeat Ares with a Plasma Wave in the second round of combat.
Winded / Off-Balance – Remembering how War Never Changes works, these two status effects can really make this fight easier. The trick to using them is to use them on the agent and the other hero, rather than Ares. Once they can no longer join in attacks, you can focus on Ares without consequence. After he is defeated, War Never Changes will go away.
