If you have a WordPress blog chances are you’re bombarded with spam messages daily. It can be a daunting task to remove these spam comments each day. There are ways you can help to cut down on much of this spam and only let legitimate comments come through. I’ll go over a few techniques that you can use to help reduce the amount of spam comments on your WordPress blog.
One of the greatest features of WordPress is the plugins that you can add. And one of the best plugins that is designed to remove many spam comments is the Askimet plugin that comes with a standard installation. By enabling this plugin you can remove most of your spam messages. You’ll need to sign up at the Askimet site and get a security key to use however.
The reason why most comments are added is because the spammer is looking for a backlinks to their site. A great way to eliminate these spam comments with links you can change the comment settings by clicking on Settings and then on Discussion. You will see a setting that allows you to hold a comment if it has 2 links. Change this setting to a single link, after all you don’t want to link to other sites in comments.
Further down the page you can blacklist many words that will send the comment directly to the spam box so you don’t need to worry about it. Simply fill up this box with any word or phrases that you have been spam comments on. It will take a bit of time to get a list built up but your spam comments should get less and less as you add more words.
You can also add a captcha image to the comment form or use a third party solution. Both of these will help eliminate spam comments however they may require a fee. Your users may also not want to register at a third party site just to post a comment as well. Most users however, typically don’t mind entering a captcha image to post a legitimate comment.
