If your cat has taken on the bad habit of spraying throughout the house, instant action is essential to prevent further damage. The stench of cat pee is hard to ignore, because it’s strong and lingers. If you have it on-hand, an enzymatic pet stain cleanser can effectively eliminate the stain and the smell. This is essential, because if any stain residue is left behind, your furry pal might feel the urge to re-soil the area. If you’re out of pet stain cleanser, or if you want to save some money, this homemade vinegar-based pet stain remedy, which I successfully tried and tested myself, might come in handy.
Douse the area where your cat peed with cold water. If you’re dealing with carpet, fully saturate the stain and a wide perimeter around the stain.
Place paper towels over the wet area and blot up the moisture. You can even stand on the paper towels while wearing shoes to remove deep-lying moisture from the carpet. Discard the soiled paper towels in trash located outside of the house. If you don’t want to waste paper towels, use old cloths or towels to remove as much of the excess moisture as you can.
Mix an equal part of water with an equal part of white vinegar, and pour the mixture into a spray bottle.Vinegar is a chemical-free and effective cleanser, due to it’s high acidity level.
Spray the vinegar-water mixture over and around the stained area and let it sit for 10 minutes. Fully saturate the area, and also lift and spray the bottom of the carpet. The vinegar eliminates the stain and smell, just like an over-the-counter cleanser would.
Blot the excess moisture with paper towels or old clothes and towels. Stand on the towels again to absorb as much liquid. The area will now smell of white vinegar more so than cat urine. Although this smell is also not too pleasant, it’s not as bad as cat urine. Allow the stain to air-dry.
Sprinkle baking soda over the stain when the carpet is dry to further absorb any odors. You can also use a baking-soda based air freshener with a pleasant scent.
Leave the baking soda on the carpet for at least 10 minutes, and then vacuum the area.
