Obviously I’m a writer. I work from home. Some days this is such a blessing and other days it feels like a curse. It affords me flexibility in my schedule for appointments, errands, etc. Plus since all I need to work is my laptop, I can work while I travel too. However, sometimes I find myself falling into the work- at- home- trap. I find myself doing less actual work and more things like laundry and cleaning and the administrative work that a functioning home requires. Here are some tips to stick to the work that needs to be done.
Ideally you will have a proper office to work in, but if you don’t have that space, that’s ok too. Any space will do as long as it is dedicated to you and your essential work equipment. It can even be the dining room table if that’s all that you have available to you, but work from the same place every day to create some consistency. It will add structure to your work life.
When I used to go into an office every day, I was the most organized and prepared person around. I would clean the night before, make my lunch, and make sure I had clean clothes ready to go. I liked my mornings to be stress free and as smooth as possible. When I started working from home, all of my good habits disappeared. This meant that now when I get up in the morning I was cleaning up from dinner the night before, doing laundry, and taking my time getting ready. When I reinstated my previous habits, I noticed that I got more of my writing work done each day.
Dress for Success
This seems like a no-brainer, but I broke this rule for a long time and I could see the toll it took on my work. Even though you can work all day in your pajamas doesn’t mean you should. Even if you are dressing casually, put clothes on that you would wear to the grocery store. This helps remind you that you are working, not just hanging out at home.
Find a Secondary Location
If your equipment allows you to do so, consider doing some of your work at a coffee shop or library. It can be so isolating to be home by yourself all day every day. It’s really helpful if you can get out of the house and work among other people.
Follow these steps and you will notice your productivity soar.
