I’m a firm believer that being polite and kind to someone costs you absolutely nothing. When you live in a community of people who are your neighbors, it is important to display these qualities. You never know when you might need them. Here are some simple tips to help.
Be pleasant – When you see someone in your neighborhood offer up a pleasant hello. If you are new to the area, take the time to introduce yourself.
Respect privacy – Being neighborly doesn’t mean being nosy. It’s not necessary to know every little detail about them. If you ask them something and they respond by telling you they would rather not discuss that issue let it go. Don’t keep poking and prying. Additionally being a neighbor does not mean you have the right to go to their home at any time you get the urge to do so. Respect their privacy just like you would want yours protected too.
Driveway – Do not block your neighbor’s driveway. Besides the fact that it is their property you never know when they may need to get in or leave from it.
Loud music – Playing music is acceptable except when it is so loud that it’s blaring throughout the whole neighborhood. People may be trying to sleep in preparation for the next day. There may also be a noise ordinance in place that would prohibit this when it gets out of hand.
Report suspicious activity – Do your neighbor a favor by reporting any unusual or suspicious behavior that is happening while they are away from the home. It could be that someone is scouting out the area to break in unsuspecting homes. Contact the police if necessary.
Lawn – Grass is meant to be mowed regularly to avoid the overgrowth of weeds and unwanted plants. An unkempt yard is bad for the neighborhood because it could lower the value of the homes. Additionally it keeps animals from making it their secret hideaway. Do your part in making yours look good.
Look out for one another – Check up on neighbors if you haven’t seen them for a while. This is especially good for elderly people living on their own. They will almost always be grateful for your concern.
